How did it all begin?
After moving to Townsville over 3 years ago, I fell into the cleaning industry doing “Bond Return Work” in vacant houses. Prior to this I was a singing teacher in Deniliquin NSW. Cleaning was a far cry from working in a comfortable studio working with my students on musical scales and singing!! Cleaning was simply hard, physical work but I took it as an opportunity to learn all I could about cleaning techniques and cleaning products. This led to coming across houses in the tropics that were suffering from “Mould” growth. I was told by a number of people, that Oil of Cloves kills mould in a safe and effective way. I didn’t like using chemicals in people’s homes and I could not find a readily mixed product on the shelves of stores in Townsville. So began the mixing of Clove Oil to combat mould. In over 2 years, there was not one single call back for mould re growth from the homes we had treated. My business partner at the time and I were known as the “Mould Murderers”. After much research I came across a reliable supplier of a good quality Clove Oil which contains a consistent and high EUGENOL content. It is the eugenol content of the clove oil, which kills mould. We also blend the beautiful, Australian grown, “Lemon Myrtle Oil” in our product. This is grown on our door step in the beautiful Whitsunday region. We love supporting Australian grown and made products.
What do you like most about being a stallholder?
It would have to be the people we get to meet. Having a stall brings opportunity, not only to tell people about your product and also sell your product, but also a valuable opportunity to listen and learn about people’s experiences with mould problems. We get to meet people from all walks of life.
What do you like least about being a stallholder?
Well I must say that sometimes you can become a little bored if the people traffic drops off and you think of the other million things you could be doing as a small business owner. Because we are in our infancy, we need to wear many hats and that includes, administration, advertising and promotion, blending and packaging our product and working on our new products, the list is endless.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I would love for our product and business “Oils of Valete Australia” to be a trusted and household name in every Australian home. Aim high! In five years my partner and I would love to be on the road travelling around Australia and setting up at markets along the way. That would be a wonderful life style and we would get to meet so many interesting people.
Any funny stories to share about your time as a stallholder?
One beautiful older lady approached our stall at Castletown Shopping Centre and asked if she could use our product in her cooking. I replied; “Well you can use Clove Oil in cooking but this product is made to kill mould” she responded with “It’s about time they did that!” I told her; “Actually we make this product right here in Townsville” to which she replied, “ Yes, yes it’s about time they put that stuff in a bottle” and off she went none the wiser that we actually are THEY. A man approached us ahead of his wife and quickly asked us if Mould Destroyer Plus was good for treating mould on boats. “ Yes “, we assured him “it is excellent for boats”. His wife walked up and rolling her eyes, said: “Oh more stuff for your boat is it?” he responded “Look you can use it in the house too!” He bought 2 bottles to placate his wife! And there were smiles all round.
What one piece of advice would you give to a new stallholder?
Be confident in your idea and do not give up on your product! Some people will give you negatives and this can pull you down. Always remember your intent in making your product in the first place. Hang on to that excitement of watching your idea coming together. It is easy to sell a product that you know in your heart is honest and good. People hear that truth in your voice. You will have quiet days or moments but do not let this deter you. Everyone experiences lows and highs in selling.
