How did it all begin?
was working at an all female gym and one of my colleagues was leaving to have a baby. All the staff decided to put in money to make a box of goodies- but I wanted it to be a bit fancier. So I made my first nappy cake, and I fell in love. From then my passion has grown and my designs are always updated. I always look for new ideas to add some ‘fun’ to the whole experience. I also make big sister and big brother boxes- as often the other siblings can feel a bit left out, so this is a fun way to involve them.
I have a ‘dad is in charge’ tool box with nappies, face mask, gloves (and some other items) as a bit of a joke for the dads, but also nice and practical. I’m happy to do custom orders and as I always say- it’s the creative way to give a practical gift!
What do you like most about being a stallholder?
I love meeting new people and hearing the ideas they have for a cake. Or when they leave the design up to me- I love seeing their faces when they pick up the finished cake. There is no better feeling than having someone love your work as much as you do. There is always something new and different to be made, and I have so many great customers and visitors to my stall- I just love it!
What do you like least about being a stallholder?
Cold winter mornings! It’s so hard to get up and drive to set up in the cold, dewy, frosty mornings. Or when it rains- because unfortunately it means no markets for me.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I would love to still be creating amazing cakes and gifts for people- and I would love to have great photos and stories to share of the years leading up to it. Seeing how much my business has grown.
Any funny stories to share about your time as a stallholder?
Because I make nappy cakes I often get a lot of people come up thinking I make real cakes. This one time I had a lady come up and start placing an order, she wanted cake and cupcakes (which are made from face washers) it was quite a large order and I was excited.. Until her daughter came up and said ‘mum these are nappy cakes for babies not edible cakes!’ Neither of us had realized that the other person was on a total other page. You have to laugh!
What one piece of advice would you give to a new stallholder?
Give it time. It’s tough to start out, you feel that you put so much in and sometimes you don’t feel like you’re getting as much out of it- but it takes time. Give out lots of business cards, that’s how you will grow, and over time people will remember you when they think of an occasion. Be seen, be friendly and be patient 🙂
