They communicate your message faster, boost engagement and are simply memorable. That photo of a dripping chocolate sundae on your chocolate lip balm page, and the images of dried flowers alongside your home d\u00e9cor products go together like Piglet and Pooh, right? Though hear me out, in 2020 we\u2019re lucky that there are now several stock photo sites with a library of images that don\u2019t look like they were taken in 2002. Seriously, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unsplash<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pexels<\/a>. These two sites have beautiful images and not only are they free but you can download, modify, distribute and use them as you please. If you\u2019re able to go the paid route, you will have a lot more freedom in your creativity to do what you want with your imagery. Sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shutterstock<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/depositphotos.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deposit photos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/stock.adobe.com\/au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adobe stock<\/a> are great options but there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movavi.com\/learning-portal\/best-stock-photo-sites.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plenty of others in the industry<\/a>. Here is a general summary of what those licenses mean to you.<\/p><ul><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Creative Commons<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 the author gives you permission to use, modify and build upon their image free of charge. However, the image is still copyrighted to the authors name and thus attribution may or may not be required.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Royalty Free<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 after paying a one-off fee for the image, the author gives you permission to use, modify and build upon their image as many times as you want.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Public Domain<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 are images that an author no longer owns and has given it to the public. These images cannot be owned by anyone. Once it enters the public domain, anyone can use, modify and distribute the image without legal limitations.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Rights Managed<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 you must only use the image once. If you would like to use it again, you will need to repurchase it from the author on a pay-per-use basis.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Editorial Use<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 the image cannot be used for commercial advertising purposes.<\/li><\/ul><p>The requirements under each license will differ slightly from site to site. So, it\u2019s best to double check when purchasing. Free tools like Canva allow you to create graphics and customise them with your branding. No payment needed.<\/p><p>Remember when Coca Cola first rolled out their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B8e_TDAlHwv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Share a Coke\u2019 campaign<\/a>? The whole world went mad trying to find their name on a Coke bottle to snap a photo and share it on social media. Coca Cola were blessed with an abundance of photos created by their customers \u2013 for free! Encourage your customers to tag you in their photos so you see it when it\u2019s uploaded. Putting a simple \u2018Please request permission before reposting my work\u2019 in your Instagram bio tells your audience your photos are not up for grabs.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The sneaky WordPress trick <\/strong><\/span>\u2013 If you have a WordPress site, there are a few plugins you can activate to protect your images. \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/wp-content-copy-protector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No Right Click<\/a>\u2019 for example stops people from right clicking and saving your images, as well as disabling save shortcuts.<\/li><\/ul><p>While navigating copyright can be a little tricky at first, don\u2019t let it stop you from having a killer marketing strategy.
